Hong Kong holds int\'l forum to discuss intellectual property trend

The ninth edition of the Business of IP Asia Forum opened here Thursday,with more than 70 speakers providing insights into the latest developments in the intellectual property(IP)industry.

The two-day forum was co-organized by China\'s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region(HKSAR)government,the Hong Kong Trade Development Council(HKTDC)and Hong Kong Design Center.The theme for this year\'s forum is IP:Building an Innovative and Inclusive Future for Businesses.

Margaret Fong,executive director of the HKTDC,said at the opening ceremony that Hong Kong is renowned of commerce,trade,finance,and innovation and will continue to be a focal point for the generation and trading of IP,including technology transfer,licensing,franchising,and copyright trading.

"Hong kong plays a vital role in supporting the amazing level of IP activity in the Chinese mainland and Asia as a whole,providing a connection to the international market,"she said.

Carrie Lam,chief executive of the HKSAR,said Hong Kong attaches great importance to IP and is continuing to enhance its IP regime,determined to ensure that it remains a leader in attracting global business.

Lam said,the HKSAR government has introduced a bill to the legislature related to the registration of trademarks.The judiciary of the HKSAR government set up an IP specialist list in May,making it easier to assign specialist judges for IP cases.Hong Kong will also launch a brand-new patent granting system in two weeks.

"I believe the above measures would help promote Hong Kong\'s competitiveness,and make Hong Kong into a regional innovation and IP trade center in the long run,"she said.

She added that in IP trading,business and investment generally,the Belt and Road Initiative and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development will create wide-ranging,far-reaching opportunities for Hong Kong companies and the international companies that work with Hong Kong.

Gan Shaoning,deputy commissioner of the National Intellectual Property Administration,said they attach great importance to the support for the IP work of the HKSAR,and continuously expand and deepen exchanges between the mainland and the HKSAR in the field of IP.

"We support the development and improvement of the IP protection system of the HKSAR with practical actions,and will continue to support the Greater Bay Area in carrying out regional cooperation on IP protection and build a world-class IP protection system,"Gan added.
